China Restricts Critical Mineral from U.S. Military Production

Published: 8.7.2025

China has intensified its export restrictions on essential minerals—including rare earths, gallium, germanium, and antimony—materials crucial to producing advanced weapons systems such as drones, missiles, and radar technologies.

The new controls not only reduce supply but require detailed documentation to verify end-use applications, causing further delays across global supply chains. Some mineral prices have soared to 60 times above their usual levels.

Strategic Leverage Through Mineral Dominance

Recent trade data shows the dramatic impact: China’s exports of antimony and germanium to the U.S. have plummeted by 88% and 95%, respectively, compared to early 2025. These restrictions highlight China’s dominant position in global mineral refining and its ability to leverage that control for strategic advantage.

Researchers from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) warn that gallium shortages alone could disrupt multiple global production lines, as there are few scalable alternatives in the short term.

In response, U.S. defense entities are scrambling to diversify their supply chains. The Pentagon is actively investing in domestic rare-earth producers such as MP Materials, and exploring strategic partnerships to secure alternative sources.

Recent measures include price support programs, domestic mining incentives, and building strategic stockpiles—efforts aimed at reducing reliance on Chinese-controlled sources.

Industry Insight

“This crisis lays bare the fragility of defense-critical supply chains,” remarks Dr. Lucas Meyer, a defense supply-chain consultant. “China’s mineral control isn’t just an economic pressure tactic—it’s a national security gambit. The ripple effect will drive up costs, extend lead times, and accelerate efforts to establish resilient, localized sourcing.”

With minerals now a geopolitical tool, the defense sector faces a reckoning. As global tensions rise, building resilient and diversified supply chains is no longer just a strategic optionit’s a national imperative.
