EU Invests €55M in GENESIS Program to Drive Green Semiconductor Manufacturing
Published: 8.1.2025
The European Union has launched the GENESIS initiative, a flagship research and innovation program under the EU Chips Joint Undertaking, aimed at transforming the environmental impact of Europe’s semiconductor industry.

Backed by nearly €55 million in funding, GENESIS—short for Green and Sustainable Integrated Semiconductor Supply chains—targets sustainability challenges across the full chip manufacturing lifecycle.
The program will focus on:
Sourcing and materials efficiency
Waste reduction across fabs and packaging operations
Emissions control, including CO₂ and other greenhouse gases
PFAS elimination, targeting the reduction of persistent chemicals widely used in chipmaking
This cross-sector initiative brings together industry leaders, research institutions, and policymakers, marking Europe’s long-term commitment to building a greener semiconductor supply chain.
“GENESIS is more than a research program—it’s a framework for a sustainable future in chipmaking,” said a representative from the EU Chips Joint Undertaking. “We’re not just producing chips—we’re reshaping how they’re made.”
With semiconductor demand rising from sectors like renewable energy, electric vehicles, and smart infrastructure, GENESIS aligns with Europe’s broader ESG goals and efforts to decarbonize key industries.
As global chip production scales, GENESIS positions Europe to lead not just in innovation—but in sustainable manufacturing standards for the future.
