Astera Labs Acquires aiXscale Photonics to Accelerate Photonic Connectivity for AI Infrastructure
Published: 10.30.2025
Astera Labs, Inc. announced a definitive agreement to acquire aiXscale Photonics GmbH, a German company specializing in fiber-to-chip optical coupling technologies. The acquisition is designed to strengthen Astera’s capabilities in developing photonic scale-up solutions by combining aiXscale’s precision glass interposer and optical packaging expertise with Astera’s portfolio of connectivity and signal-processing solutions.

Astera said the deal supports its vision for “AI Infrastructure 2.0,” a next-generation architecture where hundreds of accelerators in a single rack rely on optical connectivity to deliver higher bandwidth and lower latency.
aiXscale’s technologies enable high-density, low-loss coupling between optical fibers and photonic integrated circuits, which is critical for scaling co-packaged optics and photonic chiplets used in advanced data centers.
By integrating aiXscale’s precision manufacturing and optical assembly techniques, Astera aims to deliver fully integrated optical I/O modules that can meet the growing power and performance demands of AI workloads. The company said the acquisition positions it to serve hyperscale data centers and AI system builders that are seeking energy-efficient, high-bandwidth interconnects at rack scale.
Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The acquisition remains subject to customary closing conditions, and no specific closing date has been announced.
While integration of photonic technologies at large scale remains technically complex, the acquisition signals Astera’s intent to expand beyond electronic connectivity into optical interconnect, the is market poised for rapid growth as data center operators confront rising energy and bandwidth demands.
