India to Launch Indigenous Semiconductor Chips by 2025 Year-End

Published: 8.15.2025

During his Independence Day address on, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a milestone moment for India’s technology sector: the country’s first domestically produced semiconductor chips will hit the market by the end of 2025.

This milestone comes as part of the government’s broader “Make in India” and “Digital India” initiatives, aimed at boosting domestic manufacturing, attracting foreign investment, and reducing dependency on imports in critical technology sectors.

“By the end of this year, chips made in India will be available in the market,” PM Modi declared from the Red Fort in New Delhi. “This is a symbol of India’s growing capability and a testament to our engineers and innovators.”

India’s semiconductor mission, launched in 2021 with a $10 billion incentive package, has already attracted interest from major global players such as Micron Technology, Foxconn, and AMD, with several projects currently underway.

The drive toward semiconductor self-sufficiency is supported by multi-billion-dollar investments in manufacturing infrastructure, talent development, and research partnerships. India has recently approved several large-scale projects with global technology players to establish fabrication plants in key states.

Industry experts note that India’s entry into chip manufacturing comes at a time when the global semiconductor market is expected to surpass USD 1 trillion by 2030, fueled by AI, electric vehicles, and advanced communications.

“This move will not only reduce India’s reliance on imports but also open opportunities to become a competitive supplier for global markets,” said Anshuman Tripathi, a senior policy analyst specializing in technology infrastructure.

For the electronics manufacturing sector—including OEMs, ODMs, and EMS providers—India’s new domestic chip production could potentially mean greater resilience against geopolitical disruptions.
